SUNOL, Calif. (June 8, 2018) — An 8-year-old Martinez girl died in a 3-vehicle collision early Friday morning on the Interstate 680 Freeway near Calaveras Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 12:20 a.m. this morning when the car she was riding in was rear-ended by another motorist near a construction zone. Police say a driver in a black Dodge was heading northbound on the freeway in the far left lane when they came upon slower traffic and crashed into the back of a white Toyota. The Toyota was pushed forward into a grey Ford. One report by ABC7 News stated that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, but that has not been confirmed.
The child, who was sitting in the back seat of the Toyota, died of her injuries at the scene. The driver suffered major injuries and a front-seat passenger had minor injuries. Both people were transported by ambulance to Eden Medical Center. There were no injuries reported in either the Dodge or the Ford vehicles.
Police do not suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP’s Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
