Creative Ways to Stop Your Friends Drunk Driving
You want the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl LIX and your friend is rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Regardless of who wins, you’ll both be losers if one lets the other drive home drunk after Sunday’s game on February 9th.
Nearly 124 million people watched last year’s Super Bowl game, but sadly not everyone made it home alive.
Indeed, the average number of fatal collisions spiked 41 percent after the Super Bowl game telecast ends on Sunday.
Statistics show that 46 percent of the 244 traffic deaths following five Super Bowl games between 2015 and 2019 were alcohol-related, according to recent data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
One reason is there are more people drinking. Roughly two million people plan to throw or attend a party and another two million will watch the game at a bar or restaurant.
Drinking is common for football fans. For example, the last day of the pro football season they consume approximately 325.5 million gallons of beer, statistics show.
These are all factors that contribute to a rise in drunk driving collisions on Super Bowl Sunday.

“It can be hard to reason with someone who is drunk,” said Attorney James Johnson. “However, you could try reminding them that a DUI arrest will cost roughly $10,000 in court costs and fines.”
Another option is to ask guests at your Super Bowl party to hand over their car keys when they arrive. You can give them back when they leave if they are sober. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment so it’s advisable that hosts remain sober and help their guests arrange a ride home or take them.
Of course there are other ways to ensure your friends return home safely.
Federal safety regulators advise drivers to make a plan before they go out. Designate a sober driver or schedule an Uber or taxi. You can also get a hotel room that is within walking distance to the party.
Super Bowl party hosts should offer plenty of food and non-alcoholic drink options for guests.
The consequences of drunk driving are enormous. Someone you love or someone you don’t know could be seriously injured or killed in a collision.
Underage drinking should never be permitted. Remember that social host laws would make you responsible if an underage person drives drunk and hurts someone.
