Costa Mesa Teenager Arrested for Deadly Hit-and-run Crash
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (August 16, 2022) — Sysillia Morrison Montes De Oca, 18, of Costa Mesa, was arrested Friday night after she turned herself in to authorities at the Laguna Beach Police Station.
Police had been searching for the driver suspected in a deadly, hit-and-run crash from 9:38 p.m. on Thursday, August 12th, the LBPD said. A man died and a woman was hurt when the suspect’s car allegedly struck them both at a crosswalk on South Coast Highway and Pearl Street.
The teenage girl was allegedly the driver of the vehicle involved. The silver, 2009 Volkswagen Jetta sedan was traveling southbound on Coast Highway when she allegedly struck the husband and wife in the crosswalk. The driver reportedly fled the scene without stopping to help the two injured victims. She later turned herself in about 6 p.m. on Friday, August 13th, according to the Laguna Beach Police Dept. The motorist was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run. Later, authorities released her on $100,000 bail.
Police reportedly discovered the suspect’s Volkswagen concealed in an Aliso Viejo home’s garage.

Paramedics transported both the man and his 60-year-old wife to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. He later died at the hospital and his wife was released that same night.
