Teacher of the Year Arrested for Sexual Crimes with Former Student, 13

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (March 9, 2023) — Jacqueline Ma, 34, a sixth-grade teacher at Lincoln Acres Elementary School, has been arrested after investigators learned she was allegedly having a sexual relationship with a former student.

The teacher, one of several educators named San Diego County’s teacher of the year in 2022, was arrested Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. at the National City elementary school campus.

Parents of children in the school were alerted in an email from the National School District Superintendent Leighangela Brady.

Family of Former Student of Jacqueline Ma Contacts Police

The parent of a 13-year-old child contacted police on Monday night to report the teacher had an “inappropriate relationship” with their child who is a former student at the school, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. The timeline of when the alleged relationship happened is unknown at this time.

Detectives and school resource officers gathered evidence and determined there was enough probable cause to make an arrest, the school stated in its email to parents.

Police booked Jacqueline Ma into the Las Colinas jail in Santee. However, there are no further details other than that she is accused of committing crimes including lewd and lascivious act on a child under 14 years old.

Teacher of the Year

Just last August, Jacqueline Ma was named as one of five teachers for San Diego County’s Teachers of the Year. The elementary school teacher has taught both fifth and sixth grades in the National School District since 2013.

On Wednesday morning, Jacqueline Ma posted bail and was out of jail, but on Thursday evening police arrested her a second time. The charges against her also include sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography and preventing or dissuading a witness, jail records show.

She is scheduled for arraignment in Chula Vista Superior Court on March 14, the the Tribune reported.
