George Johnson, 91, Killed in Santa Barbara DUI Crash; Nicholas Hart Arrested
SANTA BARBARA (January 24, 2018) – George Theodore “Ted” Johnson was critically injured in an alleged DUI accident at State and Micheltorena streets on Jan. 23, but he has since died of his injuries on Monday, Jan. 30, according to Noozhawk.
The Santa Barbara police reported that Johnson was attempting to cross at the crosswalk in the intersection when he was struck by a vehicle. Nicholas B. Hart, 26, was heading southbound in his car on State Street when he hit Johnson.
Paramedics rushed Johnson to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The report stated that Johnson resided at Casa Dorinda and was among those displaced after the Montecito mudslides.
Police affirmed that Hart was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, causing injury, and driving on a suspended license. He had a suspended license and was allegedly in possession of an open bottle of alcohol and marijuana when the incident occurred.
Hart, who has two prior convictions for driving under the influence, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with a bail set at $1 million.
