Teen Killed in Crash on Interstate 215 Freeway in Riverside; Driver Arrested

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Aug. 27, 2026) — A 29-year-old Perris woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a crash on the Interstate 215 Freeway in Riverside led to the death of her 15-year-old passenger.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 3:36 a.m. on Sunday, August 23rd, at Cactus Avenue near the March Air Reserve Base, according to the Riverside, California Highway Patrol (CHP) station.

Detectives working on the case stated the woman’s 2008 BMW X5 was traveling at high speed in the southbound lanes of the I-215 Freeway when she rear-ended a 2023 GMC Sierra pickup truck towing an All-terrain vehicle, police said.

The impact caused the ATV to fall off its trailer and hit the sedan. The car rolled across the median into the northbound lanes and stopped in the middle of the NB I-215. The ATV also overturned onto its side and landed next to the center divider in the HOV lane.

The teenage boy was ejected from the BMW and died at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the BMW and two other passengers were taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

There were no reported injuries from the GMC after the crash.

Investigators determined the BMW driver was intoxicated, and she was arrested after being released from the hospital. Evelyn Odalma Guzman Munguia, 29, of Perris, was booked two days later into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside

Witnesses are asked to contact the CHP Riverside Accident Investigation Unit at 951-324-7210.
