Brandon Cabrera, 17, Struck by Hit-And-Run Driver
LONG BEACH, Calif. (May 14, 2024) – A suspected DUI driver struck and killed 17-year-old Brandon Cabrera riding a scooter early Sunday on Orange Avenue in Long Beach.
Police responded to the scene of the collision at around 12:40 a.m. on Mother’s Day, May 12th, near South Street, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
Karen Mativa, 35, of Compton, was driving a 2012 Cadillac northbound on Orange Avenue when she allegedly hit the boy riding the scooter just north of South Street, ABC 7 News reported.
The 2012 Cadillac SRX SUV driver failed to stop and kept traveling northbound until crashing into an a garage at an apartment building at 6100 Orange Ave, police said.
Paramedics responded and rushed the injured boy to a hospital, but the teenage boy later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The teen was identified by family members in a GoFundMe as Brandon Cabrera.
Meanwhile, the Compton woman who walked away from the collision later returned and was arrested on DUI and other charges.
Karen Mativa also faces charges of hit and run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and assault with a deadly weapon with force. She is being held in lieu of $130,000 bail.
