CHP officials reported Alexandra Puentes, 18, was driving a white Toyota Camry west on Phelan Road. She had just picked up her 12-year-old cousin and 13-year-old sister from school and they were heading home.
The vehicle slowed down to make a left-turn onto Nevada Road when it was rear-ended by a white Ford Econoline E350 work van. The back end of the Toyota was completely crushed and the van had moderate front-end damage.
The two girls, Gulliana Puentes, 13, and her niece, Analia. 1. were seated in the backseat of the Toyota and sustained major injuries. Paramedics responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but they both died following the collision. The driver of the Toyota and a front-seat passenger, Sebastian Puentes, 12, survived and were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The driver in the roofing and gutters work van was not hurt in the crash.
Investigators are working on determining fault and if any charges will be filed in the Phelan Road crash.
