 Teenager Injured in Redding Pedestrian Accident Shasta View Drive

Driver Hits Teenage Girls Walking on Shasta View Drive

REDDING, Calif. (August 1, 2024) – One teenager was seriously injured early Wednesday morning in a pedestrian accident on Shasta View Drive in Redding.

A driver reportedly struck two teenage girls at around 5:50 a.m. on July 31st in Shasta County, according to the Redding Police Department.

A 20-year-old Redding man was traveling northbound in his white pickup truck and the two girls ages 13 and 14 years old were walking on the east shoulder of Shasta View Drive near Hawn Avenue. There are no actual sidewalks in the area, but there is a wide shoulder next to the roadway.

The driver, identified as Jesse Barrera, reportedly became distracted and his truck drifted onto the shoulder of the roadway where he struck both girls, police said.

Meanwhile, paramedics responded and transported the teens to a hospital where the older teen is being treated for major injuries and the other for undisclosed injuries.

Finally, the Redding traffic accident on Shasta View Drive remains under investigation and it’s unknown if any charges will be filed against the motorist.

“Distracted driving is a serious issue in California as well as nationwide,” said Attorney James Johnson. “It’s dangerous to take your eyes off the road even for a few seconds.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports were were 3,308 lives lost due to distracted driving collisions in 2022.

Redding Traffic Accident Statistics

According to the Office of Traffic Safety, there were 30 pedestrian accidents involving injuries or a death in 2021 in the city of Redding. Two of those collisions involved a person under 15 years old and two involved someone over 65 years old.

Overall, Redding, with a population of roughly 93,000 people, had 440 injury or fatality collisions in the city in 2021, the OTS reported.
