Carson Teen Killed, Two Hurt in Freeway Crash in Downey
DOWNEY, Calif. (March 7, 2022) – A fatal Downey crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway on Saturday night left a 17-year-old boy dead and two others with injuries.
The three teenagers were riding together in a gray Nissan Altima that veered off the Interstate 5 Freeway in Downey, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle also struck a light pole and overturned roughly 200 yards down an embankment, police said.
The crash happened about 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 5th on the southbound Santa Ana Freeway, just north of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway.
2 Ejected in Downey Crash on I-5 Freeway
A 17-year-old Compton boy was driving the 2010 Altima when it collided into a raised asphalt curb as it veered off the freeway. The vehicle also crashed into a metal light pole, police said. It overturned multiple times during the crash.
Also, authorities mentioned the driver was the only one wearing a seatbelt. The two unrestrained passengers were ejected from the vehicle. The boy who died was a football player and student at Warren High School.
Paramedics rushed all three males to St. Francis Medical Center. Sadly, one of the two passengers died at the hospital. The Carson teen was later pronounced dead, police said.
Authorities did not provide any details about the second passenger who was unconscious after the crash and upon reaching the hospital, police said.
