THERMAL, California (October 1, 2014) – A 67-year-old Costa Mesa man died Tuesday morning following a head-on collision with a tractor trailer truck on Grapefruit Boulevard at Avenue 62, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner.
The man was driving a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan when he allegedly drove through a stop sign and struck a westbound 1996 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer truck about 10:15 a.m. The truck driver, Rafael Beltan, 64, of El Centro, was not injured in the crash.
Paramedics and CAL FIRE/Riverside firefighters responded to the scene of the crash to free the Orange County man from the van as he was trapped in the wreckage. He was then airlifted by helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
“My condolences go out to the family of this man as they cope with his sudden loss,” said Attorney James Johnson.
