Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe This Fourth of July
By Attorney James Johnson

As we gather to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, personal injury attorney James Johnson, founder of Johnson Attorneys Group, is reminding Californians that it’s not just people who can be affected by the noise and chaos—our pets are at risk, too.
Each year, countless dogs, cats, and even horses go missing or suffer injuries after being startled by fireworks. Many end up in overcrowded shelters, or worse, in traffic accidents after escaping their homes in a panic.
“The Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters,” Johnson said. “As an advocate for safety in all forms, I want to help pet owners take the necessary steps to protect their furry family members.”
Here are some essential safety tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday:
- ✅ ID First: Make sure your pets have updated ID tags and, ideally, a microchip with current contact information.
- 🏠 Keep Them Indoors: Keep pets inside in a secure, quiet room with windows closed and curtains drawn. A little white noise like music or a fan can help soothe them.
- 🚪 Check Fences and Gates: If your pet must go outside, double-check that all gates and fences are locked and secure.
- 🛏️ Create a Safe Space: Set up a cozy, guest-free area with familiar items, food, and water where your pet can feel safe.
- 👥 Have a Trusted Caretaker: If you’re leaving town, leave your pets with someone responsible who understands their needs.
Special Care for Horses
Don’t forget that horses can also be spooked by fireworks. If a display is scheduled nearby:
- Move horses indoors if possible.
- Secure all fencing and gates.
- Use ear covers or play calming music to reduce anxiety.
- Ensure stabled horses have deep bedding and plenty of hay to keep them relaxed and occupied.
If your pet does go missing, act quickly:
- Post signs in your neighborhood.
- Visit your local animal shelter with a recent photo and detailed description.
“As a personal injury attorney, I’ve seen the heartbreaking consequences of preventable accidents,” Johnson added. “Let’s make this Fourth of July safe for everyone, including our pets.”
