EL DORADO, California (December 30, 2016) —Two people were injured and an 11-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when their car veered off Highway 50 near Ice House Road, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The crash took place after a driver of a BMW lost control during a curve on the highway, it skidded and plunged down a rocky embankment into the American River where it landed upside down on its roof.
The El Dorado County Coroner’s Office identified the boy as Tonino Trujillo, 11, of Galt. A 13-year-old girl who was also a passenger in the vehicle was ejected during the crash, but survived with minor injuries. A 23-year-old woman who may have been driving did not suffer serious injuries.
Some passersby rushed to help the victims and were able to upright the vehicle. Firefighters had to extricate the injured boy who was then rushed to a hospital where he later died.
The crash remains under investigation by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and the CHP.
