Man Fleeing Crash Scene Hit, Killed on I-8 Freeway
LA MESA, Calif. (May 29, 2024) — A wrong-way driver is dead and another motorist was critically injured following a head-on crash, and a fatal pedestrian accident on the Interstate 8 Freeway in La Mesa.
Tragically, the driver was struck after exiting his vehicle by an oncoming Ford F-150 pickup truck and he sustained fatal injuries.
The initial head-on collision occurred at around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th, near 70th Street, according to a California Highway Patrol.
The man was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck westbound in the eastbound lanes of the I-8 Freeway when he collided with a driver in a Honda Accord, the report said.
Unfortunately, the suspected wrong-way driver decided to exit his pickup and he ran across the freeway and that’s when he was struck by another motorist in a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Meanwhile, the driver in the Honda sedan from the initial crash was hospitalized with major injuries, police said.
Investigators have not yet confirmed if drugs or alcohol were a factor for the wrong-way driver, Grieshaber said.
The other driver in the pickup truck was not under the influence.
Investigators are working to determine liability for the case.
