Tri Nguyen, 25, Injured in Costa Mesa Wrong-Way Crash on 55 Freeway
COSTA MESA (October 17, 2019) – Authorities detained the alleged DUI driver of a crash that injured several people including his passenger on the 55 Freeway Sunday.
California Highway Patrol identified Tri Nguyen, 25, as the passenger in a Toyota Camry headed north in the southbound lanes of the 55 Freeway.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the Camry driven by 25-year-old Thong Nguyen hit a GMC Sierra driven. The initial wreck occurred at about 3:36 a.m. near Victoria Street.
Suspected DUI Driver Thong Nguyen, 25, Arrested
The impact forced the GMC up on a nearby embankment and the Toyota in the leftmost freeway lane. After some time, a Ford Expedition traveling south then collided with the Camry.
Paramedics responded to the scene and transported both Tri Nguyen and Thong Nguyen to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana with minor wounds. Both are from Westminster.
The drivers of the GMC and the Ford suffered minor injuries and were also hospitalized for treatment. Officials identified them respectively as 23-year-old Mostafa Hasanein, of Orange; and 55-year-old Steven Oatman, of Costa Mesa.
Meanwhile, CHP determined that Thong Nguyen was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the incident. Officials arrested him on suspicion of DUI.
