Triple Fatal Crash Newport Beach Pacific Coast Highway (May 12) 3 Dead, 3 Construction Workers Injured on PCH

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (May 12, 2022) —  A fatal crash in Newport Beach early Thursday morning left three people dead and three others injured on Pacific Coast Highway.

The collision occurred about 12:45 a.m. on May 12th in the 3000 block of PCH, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

Newport Beach police say a solo-vehicle crash killed three people and left three construction workers hospitalized with injuries.

UPDATED: The three killed in the crash were identified as Crystal M. McCallum, 34, of Texas; and Andrew James Chaves, 32, of Arizona; and finally, Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., 40, of Newport Coast.

The Newport Beach Police Department responded after multiple 911 calls made about the single-vehicle collision on PCH between Hoag Drive and Riverside Avenue.

Authorities report the black vehicle was heading eastbound on PCH when for unknown reasons it struck a curb. It collided with construction equipment on the south side of the road, police said. The car was completely mangled in the crash.

All three people from the vehicle died at the crash scene. Meanwhile, three construction workers suffered injuries in the crash.

They were all working at the time of the collision. Paramedics transported them to a nearby hospital for minor, non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The collision remains under investigation by the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

The area was closed down for several hours and both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway were closed.

Witnesses may contact Newport Beach police traffic investigator Austin Laverty at alaverty@nbpd.org.
