Fatal Big Rig Truck Crash I-5 Freeway (May 22)
KERN COUNTY, Calif. (May 23, 2018) — At least one person died Tuesday night in a collision between a semi-tractor trailer truck hauling vegetable oil and a stalled or disabled car carrier truck on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway in Lebec, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported in the Nos. 3 and 4 lanes about 9:17 p.m. last night, just south of Vista Del Lago Road. One of the trucks caught on fire and roughly 30 to 40 gallons of vegetable oil was spilled into the roadway after the crash.
A tow truck removed the truck and 35-foot carrier holding three vehicles from the scene. The big rig carrying roughly 71,000 pounds of vegetable oil was also towed away.
Police issued a Sig Alert for the collision, but it was later canceled at 9:15 a.m. the next morning.
We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the victim who died during this difficult time.
California Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Lawyer
Police are investigating what was the cause of this crash and who is responsible. It’s unknown at this time why the car carrier was stopped on the roadway. We do not know if it was stopped in traffic or if it became disabled on the freeway. We also do not know if there were distractions to the semi-truck driver or if drowsy driving was a factor. Investigators are going over th evidence and will piece together what happened and liability.
If a negligent driver or another entity is at fault for a collision resulting in injuries to you or a loved one, there may be grounds for a personal injury or wrongful death claim. While this is always a personal decision, for many the financial losses associated with a traffic accident are significant. The losses include time lost off work, medical and funeral expenses, loss of consortium and pain and suffering.
