Two Dead, One Injured in Wrong-Way Collision on I-15 Near Nipton
NIPTON, Calif. (July 2, 2025) — Two people died and a third was injured in a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on the Interstate 15 Freeway in the Nipton area of San Bernardino County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 4:22 a.m. on June 29, 2025, along the southbound lanes of I-15, just north of Zzyzx Road, in a remote area near Nipton.
CHP investigators say Herman Owen, a 71-year-old resident of Temecula, was driving a 1999 Honda Accord northbound in the southbound number one lane against traffic when he crashed head-on into a 2023 Kia Niro.
The Kia was occupied by Muriel Seawright, a 32-year-old resident of Henderson Nevada, and a male passenger.
Unfortunately, both drivers died at the scene of the collision from their injuries; however, the male passenger in the Kia was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for medical treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Authorities say there is no evidence at this time that drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. The names of the victims were released by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
The CHP Barstow Area Office is leading the investigation. Anyone with information related to the crash is urged to contact Officer M. Aranda at (760) 255-5900.
