Man and Toddler Killed, Woman Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run
PLAYA DEL REY, Calif. (May 4, 2026) — Authorities are searching for a driver who fled on foot after a violent crash in Playa Del Rey on Vista Del Mar Lane early Sunday morning.
Oswaldo Sandoval Amaya, 25, and his one-year-old nephew, Roger Sandoval Farias, both died after the crash. The child’s mother was critically injured and his father was also hurt.
The family was returning home from a bonfire when the two-vehicle collision occurred on May 3rd at approximately 4:34 a.m. It happened near 6800 Vista Del Mar Lane, just south of Culver Boulevard and a short distance from the shoreline.
Authorities say the man and child were among four people in a blue 5-series BMW traveling northbound on Vista Del Mar Avenue. The car was hit head-on by a southbound driver in a white Jeep Cherokee after it veered into their path.
Oswaldo Sandoval Amaya reportedly died at the scene. The one-year-old child and his parents were all transported to a hospital. The woman was treated for major injuries, and the child later succumbed to their injuries, police said. The injuries to the father, whose brother died in the crash, are unknown at this time. The family has a GoFundMe to cover costs related to the crash.
Investigators say the driver of a white Jeep abandoned the vehicle and fled northbound on Vista Del Mar. The suspect remains at large.
No description of the driver was immediately available as the investigation continues.
