2 Dead in Pinole Crash on Appian Way Freeway Off Ramp
PINOLE, Calif. (Dec. 17, 2019) — Tyra Chappell, 52, of American Canyon, and Frederic Chappell, 76, of Vallejo, died in a head-on collision Monday night on the Appian Way off-ramp from the Interstate 80 Freeway in Pinole.
The crash took place about 11:40 p.m. last night between a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer and a 2000 Toyota pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Tyra Chappell and Frederic Chappell were both traveling in their 2000 Toyota pickup truck, police said. The pickup was struck head-on by the Trailblazer as it sped away from police. The Chevy allegedly was driving recklessly prior to the collision and the driver sped away when they put on their siren. That’s when the Trailblazer crashed head-on into the pickup truck on the Appian Way freeway off ramp.
The driver of the Trailblazer suffered major injuries in the collision and was transported to a hospital.
The CHP is heading up the investigation, but they do not know at this time whether drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash.
