 Uber Passenger Struck, Killed I-580 Freeway, Isabel Avenue in Livermore

Two Passengers Exit Uber Vehicle; 1 Killed, 1 Injured

LIVERMORE, Calif. (March 20, 2023) — One Uber passenger was killed, a second injured, after they both exited the vehicle near the Isabel Avenue off ramp of westbound Interstate 580 Freeway.

The deadly crash occurred around 9:22 p.m. on March 19th, according to the California Highway Patrol and ABC 7 News.

Someone called 911 to report there were vehicles swerving around something in the roadway. Police responded and located two pedestrians down on the freeway. Later they learned the victims were possibly the pair who exited an Uber vehicle after a driver was allegedly assaulted. The driver apparently drove away after the two exited his vehicle.

Also, the Uber driver reported being assaulted by his passengers around 9:30 p.m., according to Caltrans. He told authorities the passengers got out of his vehicle after the alleged assault, while he continued driving onto the Isabel Avenue exit.

Two Uber Passengers Hit on Freeway Off Ramp

That’s when the two people were likely struck by a motorist in the off-ramp lanes, just after the area where it separates from the Interstate 580 Freeway, police said.

Police are investigating whether or not the Uber driver hit the two people or if it was another motorist.

One of the two passengers died at the scene and the other was injured and taken to a hospital.

Police notified the Alameda County Coroner at 9:47 p.m.

There is no further information at this time. The case remains under investigation.
