Jeanette Ward, 31, of Fresno Killed in Pedestrian Accident
FRESNO, Calif. (August 2, 2021) — Police arrested Valerie Covarrubias, 33, of Madera, following a fatal pedestrian accident on the northbound Highway 99, just south of Clinton Avenue.
The driver reportedly struck and killed Jeanette Ward, 31, of Fresno, as she ran across State Route 99, south of Clinton Avenue, according to the Fresno County Sheriff Coroner.
The Fresno Area CHP and medical responders arrived at the crash scene where they found the victim near the shoulder of the highway.
Valerie Covarrubias was driving a Ford Explorer when the victim allegedly ran into her path. The pedestrian crossed in an easterly direction from the center median towards the shoulder.
The SUV struck the victim and Valerie Covarrubias stopped her SUV after she exited the freeway. She immediately called 9-1-1 to report the collision to authorities and cooperated with the investigation. Sadly, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
During the investigation, police confirmed that Valerie Covarrubias had been driving under the influence of alcohol. Also, investigators determined that DUI did not cause this collision. Subsequently, police charged the driver with misdemeanor DUI.
