VENTURA: Speeding Driver Leads Police on Chase, Fatally Hits Motorcyclist Richard Lundsford

Victor Martinez, 24, Arrested

Ventura hit-and-run crash Blackburn Road Kimball RoadVENTURA, California (July 24, 2016) – A motorcyclist was killed after being struck near Blackburn and Kimball roads by a speeding driver who was being chased by the police Friday, according to Ventura County Star.

The pursuit was reported just before 2:20 p.m. when a vehicle traveling recklessly on westbound Highway 126 collided with two Ventura detectives riding in an unmarked patrol car.

Police said the vehicle did not stop and sped away on the highway near Wells Road, exiting at Kimball Road where it was being followed by another marked patrol car.

As per the article, the vehicle then ran a red light at a high rate of speed, hitting the motorcycle rider and two other cars in the area of Blackburn and Kimball roads.

ABC 7 said the rider, 80-year-old Ventura resident Richard Lundsford, died at the scene. The occupants of the other two cars were unharmed.

Police told Ventura County Star that the speeding driver, 24-year-old Victor Martinez, continued but then jumped out of his moving vehicle upon seeing he was still being chased by the patrol car. He fled on foot and reportedly dropped a loaded handgun in the process.

Martinez subsequently asked help from a motorist traveling east of Kimball Road, claiming he had been injured during a fall. He rode in that vehicle which was later located on Telegraph Road, west of Saticoy Avenue, and which yielded to police.

The 24-year-old Santa Paula man was taken into custody and was expected to be jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder, evading police causing death, felony hit-and-run and felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
