UPDATE: Staples then died of his injuries at 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner.
At 10:15 a.m. Staples was walking with his bicycle on Highway 395 when he was struck and thrown onto the hood of a white 2004 Cadillac and landed 100 feet from where they crash took place.
He suffered major injuries as the Cadillac’s windshield was confirmed to have shattered while the driver was also injured.
An emergency airship was called to the scene as the cyclist was transported to a trauma center at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, but he died two days later.
A ground ambulance was also dispatched to the scene in which the driver was taken to a hospital.
Southbound Highway 395 at Palmdale Road remained temporarily shut down while authorities investigated.
