2 Dead, 9 Hurt in Wrong-way Driver Crash on Highway 101
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2019) — Waheedullah Etimad also known as Waheed Etimad, 40, of Concord, was one of two people killed early Sunday morning when his minivan was struck by a wrong-way driver on Highway 101 near Alemany Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 2:35 a.m. on Feb. 3rd. Kayla Wilson, 21, from San Jose, who also died, was driving a Volkswagen sedan in the wrong direction on the northbound Highway 101. She reportedly struck two vehicles near Cesar Chavez Street prior to hitting Etimad’s minivan head-on near Alemany Boulevard. The impact caused the San Jose woman to be ejected from her Volkswagen and she died of her injuries.
One of the six passengers in the minivan was critically injured in the crash. The victim was transported to a hospital. Meanwhile, five others were also transported to a hospital for treatment of less serious injuries. Three others from the other vehicles were also hurt, but there were no specific details.
The family of Waheed Etimad has established a Go Fund Me page to raise money to help his wife and seven children. Etimad, who was working as an Uber driver, is an immigrant who worked as a translator for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. He and his family moved to the U.S. in 2015 after he was shot during an Taliban attack. He was attending college when he was not working to support his family.
Police are investigating the crash and so far they believe that the wrong-way driver entered Highway 101 from Vermont Street. It’s unknown if drugs and or alcohol were factors in the collision.
Those of us at Johnson Attorneys Group offer our condolences to the families of the deceased and our prayers to the injured people.
