Walnut Creek Science Teacher Charged with Sexual Assault on Children Under 10 Years Old
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2017) — Walnut Creek Intermediate School teacher Michael Bartel was arrested Monday and charged with 16 counts of sexual assault on two young children, according to the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office.
The Walnut Creek science teacher was arrested at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. He is being held at the Contra Costa jail in Martinez in lieu of $16 million bail.
Bartel, 33, of Martinez, is accused of multiple sex offenses against a boy and a girl who were under the age of 10 years old. Bartel allegedly arranged to meet the children for sex, committed sexual assault on them and was found in possession and and distributing child pornography.
Police learned of Bartel’s alleged crimes after he reportedly made statements about the child molestations online. After a week-long investigation, police arrested Bartel during a traffic stop at Danville Boulevard and Camille Lane in Alamo. He had made arrangements that day to meet the a boy under age 14 for lewd purposes, police said. He was in possession of child pornography at the time of his arrest.
Police also searched Bartel’s home and his classroom for evidence the same afternoon and the school was notified of his arrest. There are no past accusations against Bartel known to police.
The current charges allege that Bartel sexually molested the boy between May 2016 and November 2017. The girl was allegedly molested by Bartel from July 2015 until present.
There is a possibility that Bartel has had other contacts with children. He was a substitute teacher in the Martinez Unified School District for the 2013-14 school year. He was also a teacher at Walnut Creek Intermediate since 2015. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of his case.
Witnesses, victims or anyone with information about Bartel are asked to contact the Martinez Police Department at 925-372-3440 or Senior Inspector Darryl Holcombe with the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office at 925-957-2263.
