BARSTOW, Calif. (Dec. 1, 2017) — Wanda Iris Romero, 57, of Helendale was killed Thursday afternoon in a collision in the 27500 block of Highway 58, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.
The crash took place about 1:02 p.m. Romero was a passenger in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV.
She was transported by ambulance to Barstow Community Hospital, but sadly she died of her injuries there about 2:24 p.m. Three others were reportedly hurt in the collision.
The California Highway Patrol is heading up an investigation into liability for the collision.
Here’s what we know so far. The driver in the Tahoe allegedly slowed down to make a left turn into the driveway of a home on Old Highway 58. Police believe she made a turn directly into the path of the Tacoma.
The passenger in the Tacoma was pinned in the vehicle after the collision and suffered major injuries. Police suspect the 27-year-old driver in the Tahoe was distracted by her two children at the time of the collision, but the investigation is ongoing.
