Watsonville Pedestrian Accident Freedom Boulevard, August 24Man Struck, Injured by Garbage Truck Near Green Valley Road

WATSONVILLE (August 25, 2017) – A man suffered injuries after being struck by a truck on Freedom Boulevard, according to Kion 5/46.

Initial reports mentioned a man was walking near Green Valley Road when he was hit by a garbage truck. The collision resulted in injuries that required hospitalization to the 35-year-old pedestrian, officials said.

Meanwhile, authorities learned in their preliminary investigation that the man was apparently jaywalking in the 1900 block of Freedom Boulevard when the collision happened.

At this time, investigators are still gathering more information on the accident.

Based on this news report, it remained unclear if the garbage truck operator will be held liable for hitting the woman. California has several right of way laws that apply to the pedestrians. These laws include the obligation of the drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing in a marked crosswalk, or unmarked crosswalks at intersections, to not overtake and pass a stopped vehicle that let pedestrians cross at a marked or unmarked crosswalk, and to exercise due care and lessen the speed of their cars while approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk. At this time, investigators are still determining what precisely caused the accident.
