Traffic Enforcement Begins Jan. 1
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2024) – California drivers should be aware of the new Daylighting Law starting Jan. 1, 2025. It prohibits drivers from parking near marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Under the “daylighting” law, AB 413, drivers are prohibited from parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalks. Motorists will be cited with a ticket even if there are no red curb or parking signs present.
The law, which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025, aims to save lives and prevent accidents involving pedestrians, skateboarders, and bicyclists. There are already 43 states with similar laws and studies show it will reduce pedestrian accidents.
Indeed, visibility at intersections has been impacted by vehicles parked near the corners where people cross the road, but this new legislation will change that.
“Pedestrian accidents have been rising over the years,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Motorists often don’t see someone enter the roadway until it’s too late.”
This law is supposed to make it easier for motorists to see a cyclist or pedestrians, reduce accidents, and save lives.
Parking Fines for Violating Daylighting Law
Starting on Jan. 1, police will issue warnings to motorists to violate the 20-foot parking law, but the real tickets will be handed out starting on March 1, 2025.
Drivers who violate the law will receive a $65 fine, plus a $12.50 state-mandated administrative fee, for a total of $77.50.
A good rule of thumb is to estimate one and a half or two car lengths. The average vehicle measures about 14 feet in length.
