3 Killed, 6 Injured in Whitewater Crash on Interstate 10 Near Haugen Lehmann
WHITEWATER, CA (May 14, 2023) – A crash killed and injured several people on the Interstate 10 near Haugen Lehmann Way in Whitewater.
According to The Desert Sun and KESQ News, the tragic accident took place on Sunday morning. Officers reported the wreck on May 14 at about 7:27 a.m.
The incident happened when a 2022 black Tesla Model 3 was driving in the No. 3 Lane of the eastbound Interstate 10 west of Haugen Lehmann Way in Whitewater.
A 2001 red Chevrolet Suburban was traveling the same direction in the No. 2 Lane at the time. For an unknown reason, the two collided.
The SUV spun out of control, slammed into the center divider and then rolled over. The California Highway Patrol said both cars obtained major damage.
Tesla and SUV Collide
Six individuals in the Chevrolet ended up thrown from the vehicle and another occupant became partially ejected upon impact. Three female occupants of the Suburban, ages 10, 12 and 31, died at the scene.
Four other occupants of the same car, a 3-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, sustained major injuries as a result of the collision.
The driver of the Chevrolet suffered moderate injuries and a 41-year-old front passenger survived with minor injuries. Two air ambulances flew two victims to a trauma center for treatment.
Ground ambulances rushed three patients to a hospital for further aid. The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released.
The reports added that the motorist in the Tesla did not sustain any injury. Meanwhile, the cause of the fatal Whitewater crash is still under investigation.
CHP forced the eastbound lanes of the Interstate 10 to shut down for multiple hours near Haugen following the wreck.
