WHITEWATER, California (July 6, 2016) — Shyan Barnes, 24, of Bandon, Oregon has been identified as the woman who was killed when a big rig truck she was riding in as a passenger in overturned in the westbound lanes of the Interstate 10 Freeway, about a half mile west of the Twentynine Palms Highway (Highway 62) at the interchange, a California Highway Patrol report said.
The fatal crash took place about 5:40 a.m. this morning, the CHP stated. Police say the truck went over the side of the freeway as it was transitioning to the 10 Freeway. The two people were trapped in the vehicle and the woman died about 7:15 a.m. at the scene.
The driver of the big rig was a 42-year-old male who lives in Oregon. The big rig he was operating was hauling PVP pipes.He was injured in the crash, but there were no specific details about his condition.
The crash is under investigation by police.
