LOS ANGELES, California (October 17, 2016) –-A 16-year-old girl identified as Whitney Rivas was killed Monday morning when she was struck by a driver as she attempted to cross the road at the intersection of South Broadway and 104th Street, according to KTLA News 5.
The girl, who was a junior at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, was struck by a man driving a red Jeep SUV about 6:20 a.m. this morning between 104th and 105th streets.The driver had been traveling southbound on Broadway when the collision took place on dark, rain-soaked pavement.
Los Angeles Police Department stated they did not know whether the girl stepped into the roadway against a light or if the driver ran a traffic light at the time of the crash, but the investigation is ongoing. The victim’s body was carried a distance before the driver stopped. Her identity has not been released, but police say she had her ID card in her backpack.
The driver in the Jeep remained at the scene and was questioned by police, but they do not suspect he was speeding.

There were 585 people killed and 50,917 injured in 2013 traffic accidents in Los Angeles County, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide integrated Traffic Report. There were 211 pedestrians killed and 4,721 injured in crashes in the county.
