WHITTIER (December 19, 2016)- Margarita Mojarro, 61, San Pedro, has been identified as the victim who was fatally injured Saturday afternoon by a falling eucalyptus at Penn Park, where six others were injured.
The incident took place at 4:30 p.m. as a group of family and friends were together taking photos for a wedding. As photos were being taken, the tree suddenly split into two and tipped over onto Mojarro and others.
Mojarro sadly did not survive as she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Among the injured victims was a 4-year-old girl who suffered serious head trauma as she remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The other victims were injured ranging from minor to moderate degree.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and were ultimately able to lift the tree off of the injured victims.
At this time, a thorough investigation is underway to determine why the tree fell over as Penn Park remained closed to the public as of Monday morning.
All of us at Johnson Attorneys Group offer our sincere condolences to the family of Margarita Mojarro and the six other injured victims involved in this tragedy.
