38 Killed, 1,064 Arrested DUI Statewide Over 2023 Holiday Weekend
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 29, 2024) – You may not want to stay sober over the Labor Day holiday weekend, but if you drive drunk, the California Highway Patrol wants to arrest you.
Last year, CHP patrol officers statewide set up a Maximum Enforcement Period to fight drunk driving and keep roads safe for holiday travel. There were 1,064 arrests in 2023 compared to around 900 in 2022, but it’s hard to say if more people were driving drunk or if the CHP just caught more DUI drivers.
However, despite their efforts, there were 38 deaths throughout the busy Labor Day Weekend in California, the CHP reported.
Starting tomorrow at 6:01 p.m. on August 30th, and continuing through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2nd, CHP patrols will be working to keep roads safe for everyone.
Also, if you are traveling this weekend, make sure you and your passengers wear a seatbelt. There are more DUI drivers this weekend and that means more traffic collisions. The CHP reports that nearly half of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing seatbelts.
Finally, there’s no harm in having a few beers or cocktails to celebrate this weekend, but arrange to have a safe ride home. A DUI conviction will stay on your record for 10 years and a criminal record will never go away. It’s even worse if you hurt someone you love or someone else’s loved ones.
“Just ask any driver arrested for DUI last year how much they are paying this year for insurance this year,” said Attorney James Johnson. “That alone should make a person think twice about driving home drunk.”
