William Platte, 44, Seriously Injured in Los Alamos Crash on Highway 101
LOS ALAMOS, CA (March 9, 2022) – William Platte was seriously injured after a DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 101 in Los Alamos.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 44-year-old Los Osos man as the victim of the wreck which took place on Tuesday.
The incident began when William Platte was driving a 2015 Toyota Tundra north Highway 101 in Los Alamos. At the same time, a 2018 Freightliner truck was traveling south in the northbound lanes.
Several collisions nearly occurred before two vehicles trying to avoid the truck crashed south of Alisos Canyon Road. A gas tank on one of the vehicles blew out and spilled 50 gallons of diesel onto the road.
The Freightliner continued going the wrong-way and then slammed head-on into the pickup. The two collided just south of the intersection of Highway 101 and Highway 154.
DUI Wrong-Way Driver Causes 2 Crashes
William Platte ended up trapped inside his car as a result of the crash. Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and extricated him from the wreckage.
An air ambulance took the patient to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment. The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk News wrote that the collisions happened on March 8 at about 7:40 p.m.
Meanwhile, officers added that the wrong-way driver and his passenger sustained moderate injuries. Medical personnel took them to the hospital for treatment.
CHP determined that the suspect was under the influence when he caused the wreck. They soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI.
The Los Alamos wrong-way crash is still under investigation.
