Five people were killed in a crash in Madera County
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26) — William “Billy” Siegel, 49, of Lemoore, and his passengers Taylor Hanning, 32, of Laton, and Joe Frank Avila 75, of Hanford, have been identified as three of five people killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning at Avenue 9 and Road 30, according to the California Highway Patrol and the Madera County Coroner’s Office.
The three victims were traveling in a Chevrolet truck that was struck by a Dodge Charger whose driver allegedly ran through a stop sign at high speed and crashed into their vehicle. The Dodge had been headed westbound on Avenue 9 when it struck the other vehicle, causing both vehicles to end up in a nearby vineyard. Witnesses told authorities the Dodge may have been traveling above 70 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone. The impact caused the Dodge to become engulfed in flames with the two occupants inside.
Two people who died in the Dodge have not been identified. The crash took place about 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28th at the intersection.
The crash remains under investigation by police.
The Fresno Bee reported that Siegel was once mayor of Lemoore who served two terms on the Lemoore City Council.
Also, Avila is a former Hanford Bullpups football coach and world-class fastpitch softball player. He was inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame in 2010.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, it appears that the driver in the Dodge is responsible for the deaths of these innocent people due to allegedly speeding and driving through a stop sign, according to the CHP. Certainly the investigation is ongoing and evidence is still being analyzed to determine fault. It’s also unknown if drugs and or alcohol were factors.
We extend our heartfelt prayers to the families of all those who died in this horrible crash.
