MEXICAN CITIZENS KILLED, INJURED IN IMPERIAL COUNTY CAR CRASH
WINTERHAVEN, California (March 25, 2016) — Two passengers were killed and three suffered major injuries Thursday night when a driver making an unsafe turn crashed down an embankment off the Interstate 8 Freeway near Algodones Road in Imperial County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Two passengers both 34 years old from Mexico suffered fatal injuries when the vehicle crashed into an empty tractor trailer. The driver, described as a 30-year-old Calexico woman, was arrested by police. Her three other passengers ages 27, 29 and 33 who are also from Mexico suffered major injuries and were taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center treatment. The driver of the vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was also hospitalized.
Police say the woman was being followed by a Border Patrol unit when the crash took place about 7:45 p.m. She reportedly made an unsafe turn as she drove down the on ramp and lost control of the vehicle which went over an embankment before hitting the trailer.
“This woman could be charged with manslaughter and other charges for this fatal crash,” said Attorney James Johnson, a California personal injury lawyer. “My condolences go out to the families of those killed and prayers to those hurt that they may have a full recovery.”
