According to the FOX 40 News and CBS Sacramento, the tragic accident took place on Wednesday evening. Officers reported the wreck at around 5 p.m.

The incident began when a big rig became stalled on the southbound Interstate 5 a few miles ahead near the Highway 113 off-ramp in Woodland.

At least three cars slowed, including a Volkswagen, in the process. The California Highway Patrol said for an unknown reason a Ford Expedition towing a trailer slammed into the Volkswagen.

Firefighters along with the paramedics soon arrived at the scene. They confirmed that the driver of the Volkswagen died as a result of the collision.

A total of six people, including two children ages 1 and 8, ended up hurt. Medical personnel took them to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. Meanwhile, CHP believed that speed and inattention played a role in the incident.
