Fatal Injuries to Airport Worker After Jet Bridge Tire Explodes
SANTA ANA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2019) – An airport contract worker died Tuesday night when a large tire on a jet bridge exploded at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana.
The victim was one of two airport contractors in a workshop near Gate 3 last night who were working on the tire of a 4-foot tall jet bridge.
A jet bridge is a movable walkway tunnel that is used at airport terminal gates to allow passengers to board and exit the aircraft.
About 11:30 p.m., the tire they were working on suddenly exploded and caused traumatic injuries to one of them. The victim was fatally injured in the explosion and the second worker suffered minor undisclosed injuries.
Meanwhile, the explosion triggered a fire alarm and sprinklers inside the workshop.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department and CalOSHA investigators are conducting an investigation into the incident.
