Wrong-Way Driver Crash 405 Freeway, Valley Vista in Sherman Oaks
One Dead, Two Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2025) — A fatal, wrong-way driver crash happened early Tuesday morning on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Sherman Oaks.
The multi-vehicle collision happened in the southbound carpool and fast lanes around 4:09 a.m. on Feb. 11th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP deputies were alerted by a dozen 911 calls to the male wrong-way driver in a silver sedan near Skirball Center Drive just minutes before the collision. The man was reportedly traveling north in the southbound HOV lane of the 405 Freeway, just north of Valley Vista Boulevard exit.
The initial crash occurred in the HOV lane between the silver car and a white car, but then two or three other vehicles may have also collided with them.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at 4:10 a.m. and pronounced the man from the wrong-way vehicle dead at the scene, officials said. The driver’s identity was not released, but he is believed to be in his 30s, police said.
Paramedics transported a Bakersfield man with major injuries to a hospital and a second person declined treatment and was released at the scene.
Authorities issued a SiglAlert at 4:26 a.m. and closed down all southbound lanes due to the cleanup and investigation.
Traffic was backed up for miles due to the crash and only the number 5 lane was open.
Investigators are working on the case and to determine where the driver entered the freeway.
“It’s very possible the motorist got on the freeway at the North Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp,” said Attorney James Johnson. “There are side-by-side exit and entrance ramps here that could easily be mixed up by a motorist.”
