Wrong-Way, DUI Driver Enters I-5 Freeway at Onramp
OCEANSIDE, Calif., (June 17, 2026) — A wrong-way driver caused a collision resulting in major injuries Tuesday afternoon on the I-5 Freeway North at the Harbor Drive off-ramp in Oceanside.
The collision, involving a white Chevrolet Equinox and a silver BMW, happened around 2:02 p.m. on June 16th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP dispatch operators reported two vehicles collided head-on in front of the Vandergrift Gate entrance to the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after, with lanes temporarily blocked to allow for emergency services and tow trucks to access the site.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of one of the vehicles, identified as the wrong-way driver, was reportedly under the influence. The collision prompted a swift response, including lab technicians and towing services, to manage the aftermath and clear the roadway.
Injuries in this collision are described as major, though the specific condition of the individuals involved has not been disclosed at this time. Paramedics transported the injured parties to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
