One Killed, Two Injured in Head-on Crash Over Labor Day Weekend
RIVERSIDE, CA (Sept. 9, 2026) — Daniel Romo Jr., 59, of Moreno Valley, has been identified as the wrong-way driver killed in a head-on crash with two other motorists on the Riverside 91 Freeway over the Labor Day weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Bureau identified the motorist on its website.
Romo was traveling westbound in the eastbound carpool lane around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6th, when his brown Ford Flex crashed head-on into a Honda Civic near University Avenue.
The collision caused the Honda to crash into the center divider, but the Ford Flex traveled into the No. 2 lane and crashed head-on with another motorist in a Toyota Corolla.
Paramedics transported Romo to Riverside Community Hospital, but he sadly died at 10:14 a.m.
Meanwhile, the other drivers of the Honda and Toyota were injured and transported to a hospital. The driver in the Honda had minor injuries and the Toyota driver had major injuries.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation and it’s unknown if drugs and or alcohol were factors.
Witnesses should contact the CHP Accident Investigation Unit at 951-324-7210.
