MENDOTA, Calif. (Jan. 3, 2023) — Yi Yan, 22, of China, died in a Mendota car accident Thursday night at San Benito Avenue and Panoche Road in Fresno County.
The 22-year-old woman, an international student studying at UC Davis, died in the collision and another suffered major injuries after the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol and KFSN News.
A 20-year-old Davis man was driving a Mercedes GCL 300 southbound on San Benito Avenue. He allegedly lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to a light rain. The vehicle went off the roadway onto a dirt shoulder where it overturned. One of the four vehicle occupants, identified as Yi Yan, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. She was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, according to the Fresno County Sheriff Coroner.
Meanwhile, a second passenger suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Investigators are working on the case and will determine the cause of the crash and liability.
Preliminary indications confirm that drugs or alcohol are not a factor in the collision, however, investigators believe speed and wet roads may have been a factor.
