YUCAIPA, California (September 23, 2015) — Six people suffered minor to major injuries Sunday night in a traffic accident at the intersection of Avenue H, just east of 3rd Street, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Driver Scott Mitchell, 25, of Calimesa was driving his 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck when he rear-ended a woman driving a 2003 Ford Explorer SUV carrying five female passengers ages 5 to 15 years old. The impact caused both vehicles to overturn multiple times with the Toyota landing on its side and the Ford ending up in an open dirt field.
Mr. Mitchel was ejected during the rollover crash and suffered major injuries. Elizabeth Astorga, 32, of Yucaipa and her five passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries. Paramedics responded to the scene of the crash and transported all six people to local hospital for treatment.
The Sheriff’s Department sent its Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) to investigate what led to the crash and preliminary results indicate Mr. Mitchell was allegedly speeding and may have ran through a stop sign on 3rd Street before driving through the intersection and hitting the Ford SUV.
Police are still trying to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved at press time.
