FRESNO, Calif. (Dec. 20, 2018) — Zayliah Medina, a 23-month-old toddler, was accidentally run over Tuesday by her uncle as he drove away from a home in southwest Fresno.
Eddie Alvarado, 33, was driving a 3-ton pickup truck when the child walked up to the vehicle and he drove forward over the toddler and kept driving away. The child’s mother found her and rushed her to a Valley Children’s Hospital in her own vehicle.
The accident was caught on a neighbor’s video surveillance camera from across the street.
The suspect, who is the mother’s stepbrother, was assaulted by someone upset about the accident and once the video surfaced they identified him. The mother did not identify the suspect to police because she didn’t want him to get into trouble as he was driving without a license.
Meanwhile the child suffered major life threatening injuries including head trauma, internal injuries, broken bones, and spinal trauma.
Alvarado, a Mexican citizen, was booked into jail on Wednesday and faces hit and run charges, but he also has an immigration detainer.
