MODESTO, California (August 12, 2016) –– Zenaida Mendez, 40, and Ulises Torres-Zepeda, 31, both of Patterson, were killed Tuesday after their vehicle was struck by a suspected DUI driver on Sycamore Avenue at Pomelo Avenue, according to the Modesto Bee and a report by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.
The fatal crash took place about 9 p.m. on August 9. Police stated that the suspected drunken driver was traveling eastbound on Pomelo Avenue in a 1998 Ford Explorer SUV and failed to stop at a stop sign at Sycamore Avenue. The suspect driver, identified as Martin Padilla, 32, of Patterson, crashed into a 2002 Honda Accord whose driver had the right-of-way. The vehicle was struck on the passenger side, pushed off the freeway into a tree where it was torn into two pieces.
The driver of the Honda identified as Zenaida Mendez, 40, and passenger Ulises Torres-Zepeda, 31, were both killed in the collision. The passenger had been ejected in the collision.
The Ford Explorer also struck a Turlock Irrigation District power pole after the first collision.
Padilla was standing by his vehicle suffering from major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center. Later, he was transferred to Stanford Hospital in East Palo Alto.
