Trash Can Falls Off Pickup Truck Leads to Fatal Crash
BAKERSFIELD, Calif., (August 20, 2026) — A fatal crash happened Thursday morning on westbound Highway 58 in Bakersfield, just east of Fairfax Road, after a trash can fell off a pickup truck and landed in the roadway.
According to the incident report, the collision occurred on August 20th at approximately 11:33 a.m. and involved multiple vehicles, including a red Hyundai Sonata sedan and a grey Hyundai sedan. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where a large black trash can in the roadway reportedly caused the initial collision. The report stated the white pickup truck lost the trash can and pulled over. The red Hyundai with rear-end damage and a semi-truck were also stopped in the center divider due to the incident. The grey Hyundai had front-end damage from the crash.
The Kern County Fire Department arrived at the scene and initiated CPR on one of the victims around 11:45 a.m., but the person did not survive and died on scene. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, California Highway Patrol officers coordinated with Caltrans to expedite lane closures on westbound SR58 to manage the situation.
Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to come forward as the investigation remains active. The exact cause of the collision and the sequence of events leading to the fatality are under investigation.
