Trash Can Falls Off Pickup Truck Leads to Fatal Crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., (August 20, 2026) — A fatal crash happened Thursday morning on westbound Highway 58 in Bakersfield, just east of Fairfax Road, after a trash can fell off a pickup truck and landed in the roadway.

According to the incident report, the collision occurred on August 20th at approximately 11:33 a.m. and involved two vehicles, including a red 2026 Hyundai Sonata sedan and a grey 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz sedan. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, where a large black trash can in the roadway reportedly caused the driver of the Sonata to come to a stop. The report stated the white pickup truck that lost the trash can pulled over.

Meanwhile, the stopped red Hyundai was rear-ended by the grey Santa Cruz sedan traveling at an unsafe speed, authorities said. The red car sustained major rear-end damage, while the grey Hyundai had front-end damage from the crash.

The Kern County Fire Department arrived at the scene and initiated CPR on a front-seat passenger in the Sonata around 11:45 a.m., but the woman did not survive and died on scene. Both drivers of the two cars and a backseat passenger from the Sonata were treated for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, California Highway Patrol officers coordinated with Caltrans to expedite lane closures on westbound SR58 to manage the situation.

Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident to come forward as the investigation remains active. The exact cause of the collision and the sequence of events leading to the fatality are under investigation.
