Head-On Crash on Highway 29, Bale Lane Near Calistoga

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. — Oct. 6, 2026 — Two people suffered major injuries Tuesday morning in a head-on collision on Highway 29 north of Bale Lane, just south of Calistoga in Napa Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported on Oct. 6th at approximately 7:37 a.m. on southbound Highway 29, north of St. Helena. CHP initially reported that both directions of the highway were blocked and that a person was lying on the roadway with possible injuries.
RELATED: It was the second head-on crash on Hwy 29 this week. Nine people were injured Saturday in a two-vehicle crash involving a drunk driver.
The collision was described as a possible head-on crash involving a white Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck and a dark green four-door sedan. CHP records indicate the sedan had reportedly been driving into oncoming traffic shortly before the crash. The sedan was later identified through a vehicle identification decoder as a 2003 Acura TL.
Cal Fire responded to the scene with multiple emergency units, including Battalion 15, Engine 26, Medic 59 and a Quick Response unit. An air ambulance was also requested.
According to Cal Fire, three patients were involved in the crash. Two suffered major injuries, while a third sustained minor injuries.
The severity of the crash prompted CHP to issue a SigAlert at approximately 8:07 a.m. because lanes were blocked in both directions. Motorists were advised to use an alternate route while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Two tow trucks were requested to remove the damaged vehicles, including a Chevrolet pickup and the Acura.
CHP reported that Highway 29 had reopened at Bale Lane by approximately 9:01 a.m. The collision was formally classified by CHP as a major-injury traffic collision at approximately 10:39 a.m.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. CHP was also checking whether a possible violation of California Vehicle Code Section 23103, reckless driving, occurred on Highway 29 near St. Helena around the time of the collision.
