Driver in SUV Hit Man Lighting Fireworks on Fries Avenue
WILMINGTON, Calif. (July 5, 2023) — A hit-and-run driver struck and killed pedestrian Juan Jose Areyan, 36, as he was lighting fireworks on North Fries Avenue in Wilmington.
The deadly pedestrian accident occurred around 9:10 p.m. on Monday, July 3rd, according to NBC 4 News and the Los Angeles Times.
A woman driving an SUV reportedly struck the father of three in the roadway while apparently traveling at high speed near West G Street. The Wilmington man was dragged roughly 85 feet before he dislodged. He was hit by a second vehicle whose driver was exiting a Food 4 Less shopping center parking lot, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department report. Paramedics responded to the 700 block of N. Fries Avenue.
Juan Jose Areyan suffered major injuries and died at the scene. His family members identified him to reporters from NBC News. Meanwhile, the woman driving the SUV failed to stop and fled the scene, but the second motorists remained and cooperated with police.
Paramedics were called to the 700 block of North Fries Avenue after 9:10 p.m. and declared the man dead at the scene.
The case remains under investigation by the LAPD South Traffic Division.
There is a standing reward of up to $50,000 for anyone providing information leading to the identification, apprehension and conviction or resolution of a fatal hit-and-run.
