Head-on Crash Near Hopland on State Route 175
MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. (May 26, 2023) — A head-on crash involving a box truck and a Tesla happened Friday afternoon at a hair-in turn in State Route Highway 175, east of Hopland.
At least one person was injured in the two-vehicle collision around 12 p.m. on May 26th, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
The drivers of a Manfreight box truck and a Tesla were traveling in opposite directions when one of them collided with the other motorist. The Tesla suffered major damage in the collision, police said.
Dangerous Turns on SR-175
It’s believed the collision occurred at one of several notoriously tight turns in (SR-175) Highway 175. This is an area on the highway where at least two other large box trucks overturned down the embankment. There are warning signs restricting trucks to 39 feet long due to the hair-pin turns. However, it’s unknown if the truck’s size contributed to the collision in today’s crash.
CHP investigators are working to determine the cause of the Hopland crash and liability.
